Dilip Shanghvi at No. 7: A First-Generation Founder Among India's Richest

Dilip Shanghvi ranks seventh on the M3M Hurun India Rich List 2026, with a net worth of ₹2,64,600 crore, up 15% in a year.

He is also the only person in this year's top 10 listed on his own rather than "& family", a small detail that reflects a first-generation story.

Built from scratch

Shanghvi founded Sun Pharma, which has grown into one of India's largest pharmaceutical companies, with a significant presence in international markets. The company expanded through both organic growth and acquisitions.

Self-made founders now make up 70% of the Hurun list, up from 55% five years ago. Shanghvi is one of the most prominent examples near the very top.

Why pharma keeps producing wealth

Pharmaceuticals was one of the list's strongest sectors this year, with wealth up 25%. Three of the top 10 built their fortunes in pharma or vaccines.

The sector rewards patience. Regulatory approvals, manufacturing quality and global distribution take years to build, which is exactly what makes them hard to copy.

Lessons for first-generation founders

  • Pick a hard industry and master it. Barriers to entry protect those who get through them.
  • Use acquisitions carefully. The right deal can add years of growth.
  • Let quality become your brand. In regulated industries, reputation is everything.

Shanghvi's place in the top 10 is proof that first-generation founders can build at the very highest level in India.
