Threads Ads No Longer Need Instagram. Should Your Brand Be There Yet?
Meta is turning Threads into a standalone ad channel. Early movers usually get the cheapest attention.

Meta has quietly made Threads more independent. From September 2026, businesses no longer need matching Threads and Instagram usernames to run Threads ads, according to Meta's announcement summarised by Ignite Visibility. Businesses without an Instagram profile can now launch ads directly from their native Threads profile.
It sounds like a small technical change. Strategically, it is a signal.
What the change means
Until now, Threads advertising was effectively an extension of Instagram. If you weren't set up on Instagram, you weren't really set up on Threads.
Removing that link means Meta is treating Threads as a channel in its own right. That usually comes before more investment in ad formats, targeting and measurement.
Who benefits most
- B2B and professional brands that never built a visual Instagram presence but have plenty to say.
- Founders and executives who communicate better in words than in images.
- Newsy and opinion-led brands whose strength is commentary and conversation.
Threads is text-first. That suits PR-led and thought-leadership content far better than image-heavy platforms do.
The early-mover argument
New ad channels tend to be cheaper and less crowded in their early phase. Brands that build an organic presence first also learn what their audience responds to before spending heavily.
The risk is spreading a small team too thin. Not every brand needs to be everywhere.
A simple way to decide
- Check where your audience talks. If your customers or industry peers are active on Threads, it's worth testing.
- Start organic. Post consistently for a few weeks before paying for reach.
- Repurpose, don't duplicate. Turn articles, commentary and news reactions into short text posts.
- Test small. A modest paid budget will show whether Threads earns its place.
Threads won't replace Instagram for visual brands. But for companies whose strength is their point of view, it is becoming a serious option.
